Beach

The over painted cherubs outside our balcony

Beach life , just like real life has its etiquettes and rituals , trials and tribulations.
I am a watcher of people on the beach.
They are far more interesting than a cheap novel.
The Prof and I are ensconced under our usual canopy. To our right are another gay couple. One older and suffering ill health, the other younger and fitter. I noticed that the younger man removed the trainers and socks of the elder when they arrived today.
In front of us is a man with his mother.
They rarely speak. She reads. He eyes up the passing talent.
Yesterday five statuesque german girls with exactly the same figures but different faces sat nearby preening themselves all day. I was exhausted watching them. They have not turned up today, as yet.
To our right is an arty looking French family of five sat quietly brooding under their canopy.
Not one has smiled all day.
They had melon for lunch.
The beach hawkers filled the gaps by flashing their beach throws at anyone that vaguely looked interested, like Peacocks fluttering their tails at sitting peahens. They are mostly poor North Africans who look over dressed in the sun.
The hours pass, and we all, I am sure,  feel more and more relaxed as the magnificent Sitges Church chimes away the hours throughout the day.

  1. Ah, people watching, one of my favourite warm weather pastimes. So entertaining! Glad you are enjoying yourselves in sunny climes and hope you are factoring up (don't want any burnt bits!) It's been pouring here for two whole days now, so I'm a little envious.

  3. nothing better than passing the day on the beach under a canopy with a nice breeze and a good book. a hammock maybe, strung from a couple of palm trees on the beach.

  4. People watching is much better than a novel, I agree. If you want smiles, give some away. I hope we don't have a repeat of last year's sunburn ...

  8. Once a year my mom and I would go to a high end shopping mall where women wore tennis outfits, diamonds as large as goose eggs and fur coats. (I'm not kidding). We would splurge on a nice lunch maybe a cocktail or two and sit for hours just people watching. That's one thing I really miss..haven't done it in years

  16. Ah, people watching, free entertainment and enjoyable. A few years ago a group of us were sat on a bench in Wall Street, New York, twas early about 8am, and just sat there idly watching the 'dawn chorus' arrive for work. The gaggle of course were suited and booted for the City, smart suits, shiny shoes, the women immaculate, but something was wrong... of course, eventually got it, the women wore trainers (heels presumably in their briefcases) as they'd probably had a long commute to Manhattan. Enjoy your holiday.

  17. You remind me of my husband , we would be sitting on a park bench, a beach towel, a chair in a cafe... he was impossible .. he would quietly comment on everyone he saw ... and I sat there and tried to behave normally, not to cry from holding in the laughter .. I must have been named The Giggling Fool by all the waiters.
Here, I forgot one day that everyone doesn't have the same lightness of spirit .. I made a remark that he would have laughed out loud at, the person I made it to , tsk tsk .. frowning at such an unkind remark .. which only she heard and she so missed the humor of it.
A sense of humor is a Wonderful thing.

  18. Forget all the observational stuff. what we really need to know is how much it cost to rent a parasol and two sunbeds for the afternoon?

  19. No wonder the French family didn't smile, they must be starving with only melon for lunch!

I've never in real life seen chairs lined up like that at the beach. But I guess we have so much coastline and so few people. I would be claustrophobic.

Hope you both are very mellow by now!

  20. I also like people watching. The only problem is that it throws up all sorts of curious questions which will never be answered. Like what is the older gay man suffering from and why are the man and his mother hardly speaking? We will never know....

  22. I am amazed at people who can sit still for so long, people watching or not. Are you not even digging in the sand a little? (Such a child I am..)

  23. People watching is addictive isn't it? Like jenny_o, I have never seen chair lined up on the beach like that. And need more space. Which gives me less people watching...

  24. Ah yes . . .
    people watching . . .
    also my favorite.
    Oh my, the stories I imagine . . .

  25. I love people watching. Living right on the beach, I could stand on the terrace and watch all day. So many stories. And, oh, the posing!

  26. I love people watching. The best place I ever people watched was the Wailing wall in Jerusalem though Trafalgar square is pretty good too.
Are you going to go for a swim ?
That Cherub looks like a sad find from Pompeii.

  27. Vivid descriptive words, John; I can feel the heat and smell the suntan lotion. Glad you are both relaxing - BUT - the idea of being surrounded at close quarters is my idea of hell. I prefer a quiet Cornish cove where I can relax in solitude, dozing, reading, listening to the surf and the gulls. Thank God I live in Cornwall and have no need or wish to travel anywhere else.
