Before Albert ...there was Joan

Joan a day before she died three years after moving to Wales

Before Albert there was Joan
Joan was a true Yorkshire cat
She was vocal, opinionated and assertive
She stood no messing and she was quick to love.
Her and her sister Betty were my first pets in Sheffield.
Joan lived until she was 20 Betty died at 19
They were sisters with spunk!
I remember very well the first time Joan met our first dog Finlay
Finlay was a sweet natured Welsh Terrier pup.
He bounced up to her in our old dining room like a loon and was promptly battered within an inch of his life

Note to all!
Never Cross A Sheffield Lass with frivolous behaviour
Yorkshire Gals hate fuss

  2. Some cats are like that.
As a very young child I can remember the morning my father let our German Shepherd out. There was a tiny starving (black) kitten on the step. As the dog came out the kitten reared up and swatted her on the nose. My father said 'A cat of character, we will keep her'. And for the next eighteen years she ruled the house with a paw of iron.

  4. When it comes to cats, you can't beat a Sheffield pussy. I hope you gave Joan a decent burial - perhaps a nice spot in your field.

  6. She does look like she's all business, doesn't she?

I noticed your reply to Philip. We had a young, healthy-looking cat die in his sleep. The vet figured it was a clot. He said there is a high incidence of blood clots in cats and even higher in those with orange in their coats, some kind of genetic link. He said sometimes owners find their cat curled up dead under the shrubbery and assume they've been hit by a car, yet they have no marks on them, and that those are often actually the result of a clot. Who knew? We didn't. It was a shock to find our cat dead in the bedroom one morning.

  10. I'm glad your pets live a long time. That is the one thing that bothers me about our pets ... they don't stay with us long enough.
And at the moment, one of mine is quite elderly and I can't bear the thought of him not being here with me.
She was a pretty cat, I love that color .. and she was so well marked.

I have a photo of my dad with his cat jumbo at age 2 and also of me at same age with the very same cat. Dad was 25 when i was born. So jumbo was a very senior kitty. Your joan is marked as our demon puss is. Where joan is orange our demon puss is grey. She can get very indignant and treats me as if i am intruding.

  13. I sometimes look at our cat, and wonder what goes on inside his mind. I quite expect he has some pretty vicious thoughts!

  14. I had adopted what turned out to be a Siamese princess. Emily ruled our house with an iron paw for 21 years. I was so lucky to enjoy her company for more than 2 decades. I am now owned by a black female Albert look-alike. It took me 2 years to convince her that I was trustworthy enough to consider living with.

  15. Beautiful cats and sweet stories of Edward, Joan and sister. I grew up with cats; I would like a cat also now, but I think it would suffer in a city apartment.
    Greetings Maria x

    1. Hi Maria, I.m sure there is some wee soul out there that would be very happy with you, perhaps someone with a disability that needs a stay at home life xx

    2. I too think that there would probably be a kitty who needs to be an "indoor" cat ~ my daughter lives in an upstairs flat and adopted two older cats who have been very happy living indoors :)

  19. Oh wow, John, Joan was a feisty girl. You were blessed to have both girls live so long. I've just lost my Jack Russell, Eddy to biliary. She was 15 full of life and love; I wasn't ready for her sudden death. xx

    1. Of course! I wanted to call one Olivia but you don't call " Olivia" down a Sheffield street

  22. Joan was such a pretty kitty, John ~ her markings were similar to our Arnold, a stray cat who decided to live with us. I love that your cats and dogs all have such "normal" names ~ our's have always had proper "human" names too LOL
